On May 17, 2023, Dr. Denis Mukwege, 2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner, appointed  Albert Moleka as his special advisor.   He has also appointed other political leaders and activists within his closest team.  The appointment of Congolese political figures as his closest advisors, has raised the expectations that  Dr. Denis Mukwege is ready for the next steps:  a political career with the aim to become the next President of the DRC in the upcoming elections, planned in December 2023. In the last years, he has  been having contacts  with world leaders including French president Emmanuel Macron, the Pope, UK leaders, and USA leaders. He has also been meeting other Congolese opposition leaders and potential presidential candidates, including former Prime-Minister Matata Mponyo,  Martin Fayulu who is regarded as the  true winner of the previous elections , Moîse Katumbi, and Dely Sessanga.

Denis Mukwege is a gynecologist and a pentecostal pastor. He founded and works in Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, where he specializes in the treatment of women, victims of sexual violence and rape by armed rebels.  In Bukavu, he lives under UN protection due to  persistent death threats, that have increased when he  called for an establishment of an international tribunal on crimes committed in Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) from  1996 to date.  Some of these crimes were investigated and documented in the United Nations Mapping Report of 2010 but were never prosecuted. Hence, the tribunal would also reactivate the UN Mapping Report and investigate and prosecute  war criminals , including  troops from Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi, as well as regular Congolese troops and militia leaders.

Albert Moleka: An Advisor to Dennis Mukwege,  Formerly Close to Felix Tshisekedi's Father.

Albert Moleka has been well known in the political circles in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, for many years. An influential ex-member of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS), he was very close to the  late Etienne Tshisekedi Wa Mulumba,  the  father of the current DRC President Felix Tshisekedi and the UDPS  founder and president.  Between  October 2008 and May 2014, Albert Moleka was first the assistant and spokesman, and later chief of staff and spokesman for Etienne Tshisekedi.
Albert Moleka is also a chaplain of prisons and hospitals, a business manager and an activist, with a professional experience in many countries, including the USA and the DRC.

At his appointment,   Vital Barholere, Director of Cabinet of Dr. Denis Mukwege, highlighted the achievements and experience of Albert Moleka, focusing on the culture and political experience.

“His diverse background in the fields of pastoral care, business, sport, culture; his solid political experience and his sensitivity to the challenges of rebuilding our nation will be key assets in promoting the values he has in common with Prof. Dr. Denis Mukwege and the ambition to contribute to the restoration of the dignity of our people”, declared Vital Barholere Director of Cabinet of Denis Mukwege,  adding that:

"The Nobel Peace Prize laureate is convinced that with his many skills, Mr. Moleka will be keen to strengthen his close team and will be able to get involved with passion and dexterity in the projects he carries out for Peace and the rebirth of our country. The extended Nobel Peace Prize team welcomes him.”

New Dynamics Leading to Upcoming Elections

Reacting at his appointment as the special advisor, Albert Moleka said:.

I deeply thank Dr. Denis Mukwege, Nobel Peace Prize, for the call to work alongside him for the restoration of the dignity of Congo and its people, and I am very honored. This appointment constitutes for me a real challenge coming from a world-class personality respected both in the scientific and humanitarian field, as well as in the political world”,

In March 2023, Dennis Mukwege had a secret meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, during his visit in Kinsasa, before the latter met DRC President Felix Tshisekedi. The meeting, added to Emmanuel Macro's agenda at the last minute and only made public after the French president left the country,  raised concerns and anxiety within Felix Tshisekedi's entourage.

In late July 2023 early August 2023,  Dennis Mukwege has been meeting with many personalities and political figures, while  a political group supporting him has submitted a list for the legislative elections.

A Vocal Critic of the International Community's Double Standards Regarding the latest Invasion of DRC by Rwandan Military

In 2021, for the second time, Rwandan troops invaded the DRC under the cover of M23 rebels. Since then Denis Mukwege has called for "the international mobilization against Rwanda's aggression in DRC. He has also pointed  to and denounced  the double standards of the Western powers  in reference to the rapidity with which it  condemned and sanctioned Russia over its invasion of Ukraine,  while holding back on sanctions against Rwanda and its dictatorship.

Even as the 2023 presidential elections approach, Dr. Dennis Mukwege has continued to push for  investigating and prosecuting war criminals , including  troops from Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi, as well as regular Congolese troops and militia leaders.

At the same time, while denouncing the inaction and hypocrisy of the international community, he has raised a red flag on the on-going  corruption of Congolese leaders,  who have been focusing on enriching themselves while the Congolese people has been facing  more than 30 years of wars, humanitarian tragedies, massacres,  and  genocides.

This stand has boosted his support among the Congolese people and activists and increased the odds to become the next DRC president.
